Quilt arrived at our 2nd grade classroom when Lynne Witte returned from the Midwest Iditarod Teacher’s Conference in Curtis, Michigan. The quilt was a surprise to the students and a terrific tool to launch the Iditarod theme in our classroom.

Using the quilt blocks “Give Your Best” and “You Can Reach a Goal When You Try” I expanded our classroom theme to Learn, Love, and Lead. Throughout the year, my second graders will have opportunities to show how they learn, love, and lead to accomplish everyday situations.

The Iditarod is a perfect tool for showing young children that a puppy needs to learn using love and compassion. Lead dogs are concrete examples for young children to understand the dog needs to listen and know to lead a team through dangerous situations.

The Detroit Tiger’s our local major league baseball team accomplished a championship during the time the quilt was in our classroom. The Tiger’s win was an example of “Giving Your Best” and “Reaching a Goal”.

Our class is making a classroom quilt showing how to Learn, Love, and Lead to Reach our Goal. Each student has drawn and colored a paper copy while Quilt was in our classroom. Our next step is to transfer the pictures to fabric. The class will each have a role to assemble, sew themselves with a machine, and tie backing for classroom display.

We have recorded the states where Quilt will travel monthly. We will learn some facts about each state where Quilt travel.

May your journey be an adventure.
